This page is intended to be a basic guide on how to use the various functions of the wiki. If you have any questions or need further help, by all means, feel free to post on the talk page. Also, you can test what you've learned in the sandbox.

How To Register For The Wiki

To Register for the Wiki, do the following when logged in to earthenring.eu;

User Control Panel → Usergroups → Select the Wiki usergroup → Scroll down and click submit. Done!

Getting Started

Creating A Page

So, say you want to create a page for your character. First thing to do is to search for the name of the page you wish to create - in this case the name of your character. Let us, for the sake of an example, say that his name is Bobby Dyson. You should now see a message like this;

There is no page titled "Bobby Dyson". You can create this page.

Click the red "create this page" letters, which should bring you to the page creation / editing screen.

First of all, you will want to insert a character info box. This will appear as a box such as the one to the right, and presents basic information about your character in an approachable manner. To do this, insert the code found in the box below into the Edit screen of your page, and fill out the relevant information as needed - as an example, some fictive information is entered for Bobby Dyson here.

The Rest Of The Page

The rest of the page is built in a very simple manner. First of all, start off with a small Wiki-like sum-up of the information in the article; Then, construct various sections, marked with headlines.

A standard format would be to have a ===History=== and a ===Recent=== headline, possibly divided into sub-headlines if they are too long. Then, any further headlines that the player desires. Other popular headlines include Personality and Appearance.

Bonus Bits

This section will include some of the more advanced stuff.

Categories

Categorizing your page is a means to put in the appropriate Wiki categories, making it easier for other people to filter and find. Do this by adding
[[category:Name of category]] anywhere on the page. So, for instance, if your character is part of the Alliance, you should put in [[category:Alliance]]. A page can, and in most cases should, be in several categories. For a complete list of categories, see this page, and to see which categories the different races normally belong in, see the table below;

Linking To Other Wiki Pages

Linking to other wiki pages is very simple, just write [[Page name]]. So, say you want to link to the Ironforge Guards page - simply type in [[Ironforge Guards]], and it becomes a link like this; Ironforge Guards.

You can also do similar things with wowwiki pages. To link to a wowwiki page, write [[wowwiki:Name of Wowwiki page|What the link text should be]]. So, you want to link to the wowwiki Druid page, and have the link text be "see here"? That would be [[wowwiki:Druid|see here]], the result being this - see here.

On that note, you can also do the trick with making the link text different to the page name with internal Wiki links - [[Ironforge Guards|lookie here]] becomes lookie here.

Uploading Pictures

Uploading pictures is likewise a very simple matter. Simply go to this page, and the rest should pretty much explain itself.

Redirecting

Say, your character's full name is Bobby Byson. But as your in-game name in that case likely would be Bobby, wouldn't it be cool if people were sent to the "Bobby Dyson" page even if they only searched for "Bobby"? There's a way to do that, and it's called a redirecting page. simply make the page that you want people to be redirected from and write nothing but #REDIRECT [[Name of the page you want people to be redirected to]].
